The North West Strategic Health Authority (NWSHA) was established by the UK government in July 2006 to provide health and social care services to the people of the North West region. The NWSHA covers Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria and Merseyside. Its aim is to ensure that all residents in this area have access to quality healthcare and social services which meet their needs.

The NWSHA works with local providers of healthcare including NHS trusts, GP surgeries, community pharmacies and local authorities to improve care for patients across the region. It also works closely with national bodies such as Public Health England (PHE) and NHS England to ensure that national standards are maintained within its area. Additionally, it has established a number of regional programmes designed to improve public health outcomes in areas such as mental health, sexual health and cancer screening.

The NWSHA’s primary objective is to achieve an integrated system for delivering high-quality health services across the region; one which utilises existing resources efficiently while ensuring equitable access for all patients regardless of geographical location or socio-economic background. In addition, it seeks to reduce unnecessary variation between different areas within its remit – particularly in terms of quality improvement initiatives – while striving towards a more seamless experience when transferring between different elements within the system itself.
