University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) is one of the largest teaching hospitals in England and a major provider of specialist services across the south of England. It provides acute hospital services for more than 2 million people living in Southampton and south Hampshire, plus specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiac services, cancer care and neonatal intensive care to more than 3 million people in central southern England and the Isle of Wight. The trust also runs several community healthcare sites across its catchment area.

The trust was founded in 1993 following the merger of four separate NHS trusts into one organisation. UHS has since become a centre of excellence for many specialities including cardiology, stroke medicine and cancer care. It is now recognised as one of the top performing trusts nationally with high levels of patient satisfaction ratings.

The Trust offers comprehensive research capabilities through its strong links with both universities located within close proximity – University College London (UCL) and University of Southampton (UoS). It has established a number of academic posts to facilitate clinical research activity, including Professor UCL-UoS joint Professorship posts which enable academics from both institutions to collaborate on research projects at UHS.

In addition to its core healthcare functions, UHS works closely with local partners to provide additional social support services such as housing advice, financial advice and bereavement support for patients or their families dealing with long term illness or death within the family. This work is largely supported by volunteers from charitable organisations who dedicate their time to help those in need around South Hampshire area
