NHS Health Scotland is an executive agency of the Scottish Government, responsible for improving and protecting the health and wellbeing of people in Scotland. It works to reduce health inequalities, improve public health outcomes, and promote healthier lifestyles.

The organisation was established in April 2008 as part of a reorganisation of NHS Scotland. Its remit includes providing evidence-based advice on public health policy; developing national strategies for improving public health; leading campaigns to raise awareness about important issues such as healthy eating, physical activity and mental wellbeing; and supporting local authorities with their public health responsibilities.

NHS Health Scotland works closely with other organisations across the UK including Public Health England, NHS England, Welsh Government and Northern Ireland Executive. It also collaborates with a range of partners from academia, charities and industry to deliver its programmes.

NHS Health Scotland has a number of key initiatives which aim to improve the nation’s overall health:

• The Healthy Living Programme – this programme provides information on how to lead a healthier lifestyle through diet, exercise and stress management.

• The Change4Life campaign – this initiative encourages people to make small changes that can have big impacts on their long-term health.

• The Alcohol Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) scheme – this scheme sets out minimum prices for alcohol products in order to discourage excessive drinking among young people.

• The Tobacco Control Strategy – this strategy outlines measures designed to reduce smoking rates in Scotland by encouraging smokers to quit or switch to less harmful alternatives such as e-cigarettes or nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

Overall, NHS Health Scotland is committed to improving the nation’s overall well-being by providing evidence-based advice on public health policy; developing national strategies for improving public health; leading campaigns that raise awareness about important issues such as healthy eating, physical activity and mental wellbeing; and supporting local authorities with their public health responsibilities
