Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large acute hospital trust based in Gloucestershire, England. It provides general and specialist healthcare services to more than 700,000 people living in the county of Gloucestershire and parts of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Wiltshire. The trust employs over 6,500 staff across its two main sites – Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. The trust provides a wide range of services including accident & emergency care, critical care medicine, cancer treatment (including radiotherapy), orthopaedic surgery and maternity services. It also has a dedicated Children’s Centre at Gloucester Royal Hospital which offers paediatric outpatient clinics as well as inpatient wards for children aged 0-16 years old. Other specialist departments include cardiology, neurology, diabetes & endocrinology, renal dialysis units and mental health facilities. In addition to its core clinical activities the trust also runs several community healthcare services such as district nursing teams who provide home visits for elderly patients; intermediate care centres which offer short term rehabilitation for people recovering from an illness or injury; sexual health clinics; minor injuries units; palliative care teams who support those with life limiting illnesses; midwifery led birthing units (MLUs) offering home births or water births if desired by the patient; community dental services; hearing aid fitting clinics etc… The trust strives to provide high quality patient-centred care through its commitment to continually developing its staff’s skills and experience whilst investing heavily in state-of-the-art medical equipment so that it can offer cutting edge treatments alongside traditional methods of treatment where appropriate. As part of their ongoing commitment to improving patient safety they have recently introduced electronic prescribing systems into both hospitals meaning that prescriptions are no longer handwritten but are instead electronically logged into the system meaning there is less risk of human error when writing out prescriptions manually. They have also invested heavily in modernising their IT systems allowing them to access records faster leading to improved diagnosis timescales thereby reducing waiting times for patients attending appointments or undergoing tests/treatments within the hospital setting itself
