The Yorkshire and The Humber Strategic Health Authority (SHA) is a regional health authority responsible for the delivery of healthcare services in the Yorkshire and The Humber region of England. It was established in April 2006 as part of the government's NHS reforms, and is one of ten SHAs across England. The SHA works to ensure that high quality healthcare services are provided to all residents in its area, by providing strategic direction, setting standards, monitoring performance and ensuring resources are used effectively. It also has responsibility for commissioning specialist services from providers such as hospitals or mental health trusts. The SHA works closely with local authorities, Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), NHS Foundation Trusts and other stakeholders to ensure that local needs are met through effective planning and commissioning of services. In addition it provides advice on public health issues such as smoking cessation or healthy eating initiatives. The SHA also plays an important role in helping to shape national policy on healthcare provision by working with other SHAs across England to develop best practice models which can be adopted nationally. This includes developing new ways of delivering care which make use of technology or innovative approaches such as telemedicine or integrated care pathways. Overall the aim of the SHA is to provide high quality healthcare services which meet local needs while making efficient use of resources available within its region.
