South Tyneside Primary Care Trust (PCT) is a NHS organisation that serves the people of South Tyneside and provides them with access to health services. The PCT was formed in April 2006, replacing the South Tyneside Health Authority which had been in place since 1974. It is responsible for ensuring that the people of South Tyneside have access to high-quality health services that are tailored to meet their needs.

The PCT provides a range of services including general practice, community nursing, mental health services, and sexual health services. It also manages the local ambulance service, GP out-of-hours service and district nursing service. In addition, the PCT runs a range of programmes aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of the local population, such as child immunisation programmes, smoking cessation clinics and weight management services.

The PCT is managed by a Board of Directors who are responsible for setting its strategy and making sure that it meets its objectives. The Board consists of representatives from local GPs, nurses and other healthcare professionals as well as members of the public who bring their expertise to bear on decisions about how best to serve the people of South Tyneside.

The PCT works in partnership with other organisations to deliver its services effectively. These include South Tyneside Council, hospitals in the region and voluntary sector organisations such as Age UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The PCT’s main aim is to ensure that everyone in South Tyneside has access to quality healthcare when they need it. To this end it works with its partners to promote better health through prevention and early intervention programmes. It also seeks to reduce inequalities in access to healthcare by providing targeted support for those most in need.
