Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDHT) is an NHS Foundation Trust providing acute, community and mental health services to the people of North Devon. The trust was formed in April 2006 from the merger of two trusts; Northern Devon Healthcare Trust and North Devon District Hospital NHS Trust. NDHT provides a wide range of healthcare services for more than 500,000 people across North Devon and parts of Torridge, West Somerset and East Cornwall. The trust's main hospital site is at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital in Exeter where it runs a number of specialist services including cancer care, cardiology, diabetes care and stroke rehabilitation. It also has smaller hospitals in Barnstaple and Bideford which provide minor injuries units, maternity care, outpatients departments as well as day surgery units. In addition to this the trust operates over 30 community health centres offering general practice clinics along with other healthcare services such as district nursing teams, physiotherapy and podiatry. Mental health services are provided by NDHT through a range of local community based teams covering both adults’ and children’s mental health needs as well as secure mental health beds located at Dawlish Hospital near Exeter. Other support includes learning disability teams that work with people with physical disabilities or learning difficulties to help them lead independent lives within their communities. As part of its commitment to improving patient safety NDHT has recently introduced several initiatives including ‘SafeCare’ which focuses on reducing medication errors; ‘Safer Surgery’ which aims to reduce surgical complications; ‘Clinical Governance Support Teams’ who ensure best practices are being followed across all areas; plus training programmes for staff on safe prescribing procedures amongst others. The trust also works closely with its local partners including GPs surgeries, voluntary organisations such as Age UK North Devon plus other public sector bodies like councils and schools so that it can provide integrated healthcare solutions that meet local needs most effectively.
