Surrey Primary Care Trust (PCT) was the NHS body responsible for planning and funding health services in Surrey, England. It was formed in April 2002 as part of the government's NHS reforms and abolished on 31 March 2013 with its functions passed to new organisations. The PCT had a budget of £1.1 billion to provide healthcare to around 1.2 million people living in Surrey, covering areas such as Guildford, Epsom & Ewell, Waverley, Runnymede and Mole Valley. Services included general practice and community care services such as district nursing, health visiting and physiotherapy; mental health services; hospital care through contracts with private providers; commissioned services from voluntary groups; public health initiatives; research projects and clinical audit programmes. The PCT worked closely with local authorities, other NHS bodies and voluntary organisations to ensure patients received the best possible quality of care by providing access to a range of specialist services within the community setting whenever possible, while continuing to develop innovative methods of delivering primary care services that are patient-centred and tailored to individual needs. In addition to providing direct services for patients, Surrey PCT supported commissioning strategies which ensured that resources were used efficiently in order to meet local needs more effectively. This involved working with GPs, hospitals and social service teams across all sectors including acute hospitals, mental health trusts and local authorities in order to identify priorities for investment in order improve outcomes for the population it served.
