NHS Education for Scotland (NES) is an executive agency of the Scottish Government responsible for providing healthcare education and training to NHS staff in Scotland. It was established in 2002 and is based in Edinburgh.

NES works with the four Health Boards, NHS Trusts, Universities and other partners to ensure that healthcare professionals in Scotland have access to high quality education and training opportunities. It also provides support for research and development activities, including clinical trials, as well as developing new technologies and treatments.

NES works closely with the General Medical Council (GMC) to ensure that all medical practitioners are properly trained and qualified. It also works with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to ensure that nurses are adequately trained and qualified.

NES has a range of initiatives aimed at improving healthcare education in Scotland, such as its ‘Healthcare Improvement Scotland’ programme which focuses on improving patient safety through better training of healthcare professionals. It also runs a number of scholarships for medical students, including the Scottish Clinical Leadership Programme which helps to develop leadership skills among medical students.

NES also provides advice and guidance on a range of topics related to healthcare education, such as curriculum design, assessment methods, e-learning tools and quality assurance processes. In addition, it offers professional development courses for healthcare professionals at all levels, from newly qualified doctors to experienced consultants.
