"Jerwood Gallery, nestled on a working fishing beach in Hastings Old Town, offers a uniquely British experience." - Art of England
Opened in March 2012, the award-winning Jerwood Gallery sits next to the fishing beach in Hastings’ historic Old Town. The gallery became a charity in 2017 and is home to the Jerwood Collection of Modern and Contemporary British art and a varied temporary exhibition programme championing the best of British painting.
Led by Director, Liz Gilmore and a team of 8 staff, the gallery also has a group of 60 volunteers who help our visitors to get the most out of their time here. Our exhibitions change regularly so you can return again and again to find amongst the art new treasures and old friends. Become a Member and come as often as you like for free.
The Jerwood Collection has been developed by Jerwood Foundation's Chairman, Alan Grieve, over 25 years. Its main focus is from the First World War to the 1960s. Highlights include works by some of the great British artists of the previous century, including Sir Stanley Spencer, LS Lowry, Walter Sickert and Augustus John. The collection, which continues to grow, also features contemporary works by artists including Rose Wylie, Maggi Hambling and Jeffery Camp.
The gallery café, Webbe's at Jerwood Gallery, overlooks the fishing beach, has an outside sun terrace and offers panoramic views of the coastline. It’s a fantastic location for a coffee, lunch or afternoon tea.
Our shop stocks a broad selection of books for all tastes and ages relating to art, architecture and the artists who feature in the Jerwood Collection. We also stock a bespoke range of gifts, eco-friendly stationery, postcards and products related to current exhibitions. You can visit the shop anytime without paying admission to the gallery.
