The NHS Trust Development Authority (NHS TDA) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health in England. It was established in April 2013 to provide oversight and support for NHS trusts, foundation trusts, and other providers of health services. The aim of the organisation is to ensure that all NHS organisations are providing high quality care and services to patients and communities.

The main role of the NHS TDA is to monitor performance across all types of healthcare provider, as well as helping them develop their capabilities so they can meet their statutory duties. This includes setting standards for patient safety, financial management, governance, and clinical effectiveness. The authority also provides advice on how best to use resources efficiently and effectively within each trust or provider.

The NHS TDA works closely with Monitor (the independent regulator for Foundation Trusts), Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), local authorities, regulators such as the Care Quality Commission (CQC), professional bodies such as the Royal Colleges, and other stakeholders including patient groups.

In addition to its monitoring role, the NHS TDA also has a development role which involves supporting trusts in developing their strategies for improvement; this includes offering guidance on areas such as leadership development, workforce planning, service redesign and organisational change management.

The ultimate goal of the organisation is to ensure that all healthcare providers are delivering safe, effective care that meets national standards while also being financially sustainable in order to protect taxpayers’ money.
