The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health. It was created in April 2013 to provide public access to reliable, comprehensive and timely information about health and social care in England. The HSCIC works with the NHS, local authorities and the wider healthcare sector to ensure that data and information is shared securely, efficiently and effectively. The HSCIC provides a range of services including data collection, analysis, intelligence support and reporting to a variety of stakeholders including national and local government, the NHS, academia, industry and other organisations. The HSCIC has four key roles: 1. Collecting, analysing and disseminating health and social care information 2. Protecting the security of data it collects 3. Developing standards for collecting health and social care information 4. Providing support for research projects which use health or social care data The HSCIC aims to improve understanding of health and social care services by providing accurate information about them. This includes sharing data about patient pathways through different services; hospital performance; clinical outcomes; service availability; demographics; patient experience; quality of care; expenditure and costs; workforce composition; population trends; public opinion polls etc. The HSCIC also plays an important role in improving patient safety by making sure that patient records are accurate, secure and accessible when needed. In addition, it helps promote efficiency in service delivery by helping identify areas where there may be duplication or gaps in service provision which could be addressed by better sharing of resources or improved processes. Finally, the HSCIC works with stakeholders to develop industry-wide standards for collecting health and social care data which will help ensure consistency across different organisations. This means that any data collected can be compared accurately between different areas or providers so that best practice can be identified quickly.
