Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust (CHUFT) is a National Health Service trust which operates Colchester General Hospital and Essex County Hospital in Colchester, England. The trust provides acute services, including accident and emergency, medical, surgical and maternity care as well as outpatient and diagnostic services for a population of over 500,000 people across North East Essex. CHUFT was founded in 2003 following the merger of two trusts. It became an NHS foundation trust on 1 April 2005. In 2018 it had an income of £372 million and 3,400 staff caring for patients across its two hospitals in Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea. The trust’s vision is to deliver high quality healthcare that is safe, effective and responsive to the needs of their patients. To meet this goal they focus on five main objectives: delivering excellent clinical care; providing outstanding patient experience; building strong relationships with partners; engaging with local communities; and leading research and innovation. CHUFT has been rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission for being caring and well-led since 2017 - one of only eight trusts in England to have achieved this rating. It is also one of only three trusts to have achieved 'Outstanding' ratings for both its medical care teams as well as its elderly care services during 2019 inspections. The trust works closely with University Campus Suffolk, part of the University of Suffolk, to deliver nursing education programmes through their 'FutureNurses' scheme, helping them train the next generation of nurses in best practice techniques that will support the health needs within their local community. They are also part of a unique partnership with innovative start-up companies such as Digital Skills Solutions Ltd., who use artificial intelligence software solutions to improve diagnosis accuracy within patient assessments performed by clinicians at CHUFT hospitals.
