Bristol PCT (Primary Care Trust) was a NHS organisation which existed between 2002 and 2013. It provided healthcare services to the people of Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire in England. The trust was responsible for commissioning health services from general practitioners, dentists, opticians and other providers within its area. It also managed the local community hospitals and provided public health services such as immunisation programmes. The trust was formed in April 2002 following the reorganisation of the National Health Service in England under the government’s modernising agenda. The trust covered a population of around 600,000 people and had an annual budget of £1 billion for 2013/14. The trust employed more than 3,500 staff across various sites including its headquarters at Whitchurch Lane in Bristol city centre. The trust worked with GPs and other providers to ensure that patients received appropriate care close to their homes whenever possible rather than having to travel long distances for specialist treatment or operations. It also worked with social services to ensure that vulnerable groups such as children were able to access appropriate health services when needed; this included providing vaccinations against preventable diseases such as measles and rubella as well as screening programmes for certain conditions like breast cancer or cervical cancer screening tests. In 2013 it merged with neighbouring trusts Avon Primary Care Trust (APCT) and North Somerset PCT (NSPCT) to form one new organisation known as NHS Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). This new body is responsible for commissioning most primary care services within its boundaries although some specialist treatments are still commissioned directly by NHS England on behalf of all CCGs across England including those located within Bristol's borders.
